Tassara: Romantic, seducer and atheist

Impassioned romantic with a classical soul, definer and teacher of romantic poetics, minister of Spain in Washington and London, handsome seducer, adored by the elegant ladies he dishonored, anguished atheist but in persistent dialogue with God, Gabriel García y Tassara (1817- 1875) is probably the most neglected of the great Spanish poets of his time. For the study of these facets of his figure, the principal documents utilized are his own verse, his extensive prolog to his Poems of 1872 and the Poetic Crown [necrology] that was offered him in 1878.
