The seven works published so far by professor Labandeira give a very complete view of the experiences of Spaniards in North america during the colonial period. In their classical structure, each with three acts that follow the law of the three units, the author attempts to explain, more than justify, the behaviour of individuals placed in certain historical situations, without any other value judgements than those which derive from acts dictated by political interests or by merely personal ones disguised as such. Literature here is a complement to history, revealing the spiritual temper of an age. Here is human conflict moulded into a play or novel, ruled by its own values, giving the characters' motives their justification within the context, and finally leaving the reader to decide whether or not there is anything reprehensible in their disproportionate personal ambition, cruelty or mere stupidity.
