This article deals with the imagery of the medieval woman in the second half of the nineteenth century in Spain, in the literature and art of the Realist period. In contrast to Romanticism, history and literary criticism became interested in the daily life of the Middle Ages, and this interest is expressed in literature and graphic art. The idealizing vision of the medieval woman disappears, giving way to,a demythified view of her boredom and frustation. In spite of this, in all European thought a manipulative construction of the feminine ideal continues to be worked out.
