It was one hundred years ago when Francisco Villaespesa's book La copa del rey de Thule, was firstly published. Nowadays his work still shows great interest and remarkable apreciattion, yet to be admitted within the study of the history of Spanish poetry, because it can be fully considered as the first set of «modernista» poems written in Spain. Both its premature edition -before to outstanding tittles of early Spanish modernism books such as Ninfeas, Almas de violeta, Alma o Soledades and its inmediate repercussion, could be two main reasons in order to claim for the inquestionable role played by Villaespesa as regards the speading of the new literary trends of the beginnings of the 20th century, specially in accordance with the assimilation of parnasianism and decadente movement imported from Spanish America. In addition LCRT should be considered as a poetic inaugural manifiesto of the Spanish modernism.
