This paper chronicles the coverage of American drama in La estafeta literaria between 1957 and 1962. These are recognizably distinct years within the evolution of the publication as well as ones coinciding with an unprecedented boom in the number of American dramatic borrowings on Spanish stages during Francoism. A quantitative analysis carried out initially seemed to reveal a significant presence of American drama among the matters addressed by the journal, one not dependent on specific Spanish productions, as befits a periodical allegedly intended for a cultivated and sophisticated reader. Yet, the qualitative analysis rules that out to a significant degree. With some qualifications, what this particular journal published did not differ considerably from what others did, and a presumed autonomy from the need to only cover premieres has proved illusory.
