Lorca in Cortázar: Study of an Unexplored Influence

Abstract

Federico García Lorca’s work exerted an influence on Julio Cortázar that lasted throughout his life. This is evidenced by numerous sources among which are the letters of the Argentine, interviews, autobiographical writings, allusions and quotations to the Spanish poet in numerous works, a series of romances of lorquian affiliation, a play dedicated to the Grenadian, a text of tribute, in addition to the reference to a “critical study”, today unaccounted for, about the Spanish author. Given the fact of this evident connection between two of the most prominent figures of the Hispanic Literatures, it is surprising that it has not been the object of any criticism at all. My purpose is to address this evident gap as thoroughly as possible completing an exhaustive examination of the influence of the Spanish author in the works of the Argentinian, who refers to the Granadan as a “master” and as “the peak”.
